Certificate in Accessibility StudiesCPD: 12 Hours
- Accessibility and the need to provide an all-inclusive environment is nothing new. In fact, the Disability Discrimination Act as we know it dates back to 1995 when it was first introduced. The Building Regulations Approved Document M 2004 now requires buildings which are designed to be inclusive, but that may not be sufficient to ensure that clients are protected under the Act. Building Control staff often make decisions regarding dispensations/relaxations from the requirements of the Regulations or allow variations from the Approved Documents and this in itself can have a profound effect on the accessibility or otherwise of the Built Environment.
Certificate in Plans ExaminationCPD: 17 Hours
- Following discussions with employers and members, it appears that individuals are experiencing problems with satisfying the plan checking standards for commercial and domestic properties. As a response, this programme focuses on examination of plans for the first two days, covering both commercial and domestic premises in a workshop format with feedback on a case by case basis. The second element is a two-day programme, one month later, comprising a further day’s plans examination and a final day of plans examinations under ‘office conditions’.
Certificate in Structural Design StudiesCPD: 60 Hours
- Delegates attending sessions 1 to 6 and passing the assessment will be awarded with the ABE’s Certificate in Structural Design Studies. Each session will take up one day and will be divided into three periods of approximately 2 hours, excluding breaks for coffee and lunch. Each period will be further divided into a lecture of 40 minutes, interactive worked examples and tutored exercises and discussion.
Dampness and the Residential Property: Problems, identifications and solutionsCPD: 3 Hours
- Dampness in property is attributed to a range of causes. In itself it is not a health hazard, however the consequences of dampness may be. The course examines facts and fiction, and provides suggestions for remedies and solutions.
Defects Found in Thatch and How to Condition Rate Thatched RoofsCPD: 3 Hours
- This course follows on from the Introduction to Thatch course. It is intended that a part of the course will be spent doing practical condition ratings on a selection of thatched roofs from photographs. These defects will be wholly directed at the thatched roof and will not cover any other part of the building.
Health and Safety: Surveying Practice and Asbestos ManagementCPD: 6 Hours
- With the introduction to Health and Safety at Work Act and Health and Safety at Work Regulations, it is vital for those working in the Built Environment to have a clear knowledge of their rights and responsibilities. Asbestos Management is also a consideration for those within the Construction Industry.
Introduction to Home Condition ReportsCPD: 5 Hours
- This introduction day provides information on how to build your portfolio, collecting relevant evidence, how the assessment process works, access to your online portfolio, the National Occupational Standards and how these are achieved, exam content and an overview of a Home Condition Report.
Introduction to ThatchCPD: 3 Hours
- This course is ideally suited to those people who need to have a greater understanding of thatch and how a thatched roof works. Whilst this is an introduction to thatch a prior knowledge of old buildings would be an advantage.
Residential Fire Sprinkler SystemsCPD: 3 Hours
- The design, construction and use of a fire safe building environment is key to both professional and governmental review. Part of the review is focusing on a reduction of deaths within a residential setting. Recent research and activity has focused on the role and benefits of residential sprinklers.
The Structural Aspects of Building PathologyCPD: 6 Hours
- Building Pathology involves 3 steps. The investigation and diagnosis of defects in existing buildings leads to a prognosis and recommendations for course of action with account to resources available. The implementation and supervision of remedial works concludes the process. The course covers the holistic approach to Building Pathology.
Structural Design: Domestic Loft ConversionsCPD: 6 Hours
- Conversions to loft space have become popular due to the problems of land supply. Loft conversions are affected by a range of regulations and assessments need careful consideration. The course focuses on structural arrangements.
Timber and the Residential SectorCPD: 3 Hours
- As the only renewable building resource, the use of timber in property dates back thousands of years. Essentially a durable product it can be hindered by a selection of problems and these need careful consideration by those within the sector.
