In 1995 the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) was unveiled with the aim of registering competent operatives and craftspeople. Originally the Scheme only covered a few particular sectors of the industry, and the need for a CSCS card was not considered vital. However, the importance of having a fully qualified health and safety aware workforce now means that anyone who may visit a construction site must be trained to CSCS standards, and carry the required level of CSCS card for their profession. Visit the
CSCS UK website.
Applicants can obtain a card via two routes; either through registering and achieving an NVQ/SVQ or through professional membership of the
Association of Building Engineers (ABE).
All applicants are required to sit and pass a health and safety test for the level of card being applied for, irrelevant of the route being undertaken. This examination must be passed before you can apply for your card.
Full details on how to apply for a card can be found on our application details page.
The fees are as follows:
Health and Safety Test |
£17.50 |
CSCS Card |
£25 |
To gain scheme membership, a competency card must be issued. Cards issued are directly connected with your current job role.
Within the area of competence there are various card types available ranging from occasional site visitors and trainees to more experienced levels such as supervisory and managererial roles. The CSCS website breaks down these types by occupation on their
Skills Cards page.
If you are an ABE member you are automatically entitled to a certain type of cards (please note, however, you will still be required to pass the Health and Safety Test).
Your ABE membership grade will apply to the CSCS card as follows:
